Hiking in Pinchot State Forest

Pinchot Trail

A designated State Forest Hiking Trail, the 26-mile Pinchot Trail (PDF) offers hikers a choice of short, easy walks or overnight backpacking to remote areas of the Thornhurst Tract (PDF).

The trailhead, located off Bear Lake Road just west of the intersection of Pittston Road, has ample parking and a picnic area.

A variety of different forest types can be found along the trail, which guides the hiker through several bogs where spruce, fir, and tamarack predominate.

Other District Trails

The five-mile Watres Loop at the Thornhurst Tract (PDF) winds through recent land purchases along Painter and Panther Run. Both the Pinchot and Watres trails are rated as easy to moderate in difficulty.

Also available for hiking at the Thornhurst Tract is the Howley Compass Course (PDF).

The Elmhurst Tract (PDF) of Pinchot State Forest, the North Pocono Trail System (PDF) totals approximately seven miles of shared-use trails.

Abundant hiking opportunities are available at other tracts and recreation areas of Pinchot State Forest.

Additionally, all state forest roads, the snowmobile trails, and lands not developed with trail signage are open for foot travel.
